Roger DeVlaeminck was one of the most talented classic riders in history. Skilled in cyclocross, he expertly maneuvered over the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix to win it a record four times. Hence his nickname, Monsieur Paris-Roubaix. He is one of only three riders to have won the five Monuments of Cycling. He shares this amazing record with two fellow Belgians Eddy Merckx and Rik Van Looy.

One of my favorite blogs, Jasons' Velorunner, posted fantastic images from the book, Roger De Vlaeminck by Kennedy Brothers Publishing, UK. It reminded me of my collection (1983-1989) of Tour books by the same publisher that I want to share.

Below are the only two images from the book, Tour 1984 (The Stories of the Tour of Italy & Tour de France) of The Gypsy. He was well known as a champion classics rider but he didn't do to bad in the Giro winning an astounding 22 stages (between 1972 & 1979) and 3 points classification titles. This was his last dig at the Giro supporting Francesco Moser before abandoning.

Chocolate Milk Envy

Drink your drink!

I'm reading quite a few articles online that chocolate milk (low fat) is a popular and proven recovery drink beating out the lights of some sports drinks.

The humble, affordable and tasty chocolate milk found in most convenience stores has plenty of research in favor of this idea. Here's an article from The Telegraph.

I'm not much of a sports drinker. I know there are benefits from it. But it's worth while to investigate further of the humble chocolate milk.

Studies suggest chocolate milk naturally has protein and carbohydrates that helps build lean muscle and provides fluids for rehydration and minerals like potassium, magnesium and sodium key electrolytes that are loss in sweat.

Importantly, consuming it within 30 minutes of finishing the workout. This is key. The longer you wait the more you diminish the effect of the supplement.

In fact, I bought this carton of 2% chocolate milk (image) yesterday to test it out. It tastes great just like I remember it as a kid. I've stopped drinking milk since my early twenties and just come back to it due to all the positive articles.

I plan to give it a test, right after a hard ride and look forward to embrace the health and low cost benefits from good ole chocolate milk!

The Flea of the Mountains

1933 Tour.

At the 1933 Tour, Henri Desgrange introduce a category and prize that recognized those crafty riders that love the heroics of the mountains... the grand prix de la montagne.

Riders of slight build that excelled when the road heaves upwards need only apply.

Ever since 1905, big climbs has been part of the Tour as the riders were subjected to the Ballon d'Alsace for the first time. Afterwards, the spectacle simply went higher; the Chartreuse mountains (1907), the Pyrenees (1910), the Alps (1911). In the 1930s, Desgrange changed the format from trade teams to national teams thus helping to lure out top Spanish riders.

Vicente Trueba, riding as an independent touriste-routier, was adept at bounding up mountain cols like a flea. He did not win a stage but was first over the challenging Cols d'Aspin, Aubisque, Peyresourde, Tourmalet, the Vars, Ballon d'Alsace and the Col du Galibier.

I like his nickname, "The Torrelavega Flea", known to ride away from his adversaries as if he had an electric motor as legs. He was short and compact around 100 pounds riding a 18 inch frame. Back then, riders didn't use derailleurs. They used a double sided hub and had to stop to remove the rear wheel, turn it around for the desired ratio and put back the wheel. A time consuming, stressful way to race especially over unpaved roads, at times in atrocious weather during long exhausting stages.

Trueba wasn't a good descender but managed to finish sixth overall and was the first winner of the grand prix de la montagne in 1933.

Too bad, he didn't wear the flashy polka dot jersey, as it wasn't introduced until 1975. It was sponsored by the chocolate manufacturer, Poulain. The Flea, bounding up the cols, would've looked even more flashier!

It's All About The Bike

If you haven't read, "It's All About The Bike", by Englishman and intrepid world avid cyclist, Robert Penn... please do.

Inspirational, captivating and just plain I envy this man for having the chance to go to many of cycling's major manufacturers to build his dream machine. It's all worth reading. Really, after reading it, I'm still smiling after his exciting journey to build his dream bicycle.

In a way, I've gone through a mini-journey, myself, with my Marinoni restoration. A few bumps, here and there, nothing that we can't deal with, to restore my 25 year old two wheel friend.

And, that's where I (let's include all of us cyclists) have a common bond with Mr. Penn that the journey on two wheels .... is by far the most interesting way to reach the end!

I mean, there's a whole year to have fun, and one of the exciting events I have plan is to make a special edition cycling cap. I've already decided on the color, as close as I could get to it. Actually the fabric color is pretty close to the Marinoni medium blue. Add special detailing and if all things turn out on schedule, the launch date is ...next week!

Carolle discovered a very interesting French article of Giuseppe 'Pepe' Marinoni. And, thanks to her translation, and my archives, I'm able to present this post of the great artisan frame builder... Marinoni.

He's called nonno (grandfather in Italian) of handmade frame building in Canada. At the sprite age of 74, Giuseppe Marinoni is very active riding and building his famous bicycles. Not like and average man of 74, he's not the sort to spend his time in a garden. Oh no. He's as fit as any man half his age riding on average 9000 kms per year, sometimes clocking up to 100 kms at at time.

In 1964, Giuseppe Marinoni had just finished a race by the Saint-Laurent River. Luggage in hand, he was about to jump in a taxi to go back home to Italy, his old friend le pizzaiolo Fedrico Corneli, convince him to stay in Canada. Thankfully, he stayed. His calling was frame building. Growing up in the Bergamo region of northern Italy, he took apprenticeship from Mario Rossin, the top frame builder of Colnago.

In the 1960's he raced for the Italian team that paid an important visit to Québec. He met une Québecoise Simone, married her emigrated and then opened Cycles Marinoni in 1974. Since then assembling 35,000 bikes for Canada's best riders: Steve Bauer and Jocelyn Lovell.

Canadian Champion, Jocelyn Lovell apprenticed in Marinoni's workshop before introducing his Toronto made Lovell frames. I'm not surprised, his frames are exquisite and has that certain Italian touch.

Over the years, many other riders have sought and straddled his famous bicycles handmade in Terrebonne: Connie Carpenter-Phinney, Tom Morrris, Beth Heiden and Andy Hampsten are just a few who rode his masterpiece bicycles.

This great man, has brought the old world of frame building to the relatively new world of Canada. After many years of building some of the finest frames in Canada, Marinoni has attracted a loyal following. I can say, Guy and I count ourselves among this group.

Marissa Plamondon-Lu, producer of the Montréal section of the Bicycle Film Festival and co-owner of Vélos Bikurious, has organized an exposition on Marinoni, the frame builder. For her, Pepe represents the romantic side of cycling.

Marinoni is a true romantic, artisan of cycling keeping his business on a human scale. He says, "Bikes are not hard to make, but over the years, I found little tricks to better the production." Well known for producing steel bikes, the company also produces carbon, titanium and aluminum ...all custom frames.

Pepe tirelessly produces and paints around two hundred frames a year. Simone does most of the decaling (airbrushing) and keeps him in line. She actually airbrushed my name and the Marinoni script on my frame. A beautiful job.

A total of about 800 bikes are produced yearly in a efficient shop where Italian, French and English are spoken loudly. Keeping a personal, intimate staff makes for an enterprise uniquely his... small and simple. His son Paolo runs the business, after all, Pepe is 74 and deserves to be able to go out for a ride whenever he wants!

Marinoni Time!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of my Marinoni.

Last year, as my loyal followers know, I had my faithful Marinoni restored to a level that I'm very proud of.

I decided a repaint was over due and decided on the newly revamped 2011 Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed groupset. By the way, it's working impeccably. On my twitter feed, James sent me an very interesting article of his late eighties Marinoni for restoration and plans to build it with a mix of old Campy components.

It's funny, I stopped riding it around 1996 and basically stored it for about 11 years, even moving it to Montreal and back thinking one day that I would bring it back to life.

In 2007, I had it partially restored, adding new rims and just getting it back on the road.

But, I wanted more...

In 2011, I first heard of Cycles Marinoni offering to repaint it's old frames, I couldn't resist that calling. Looking at the rust spots, It really was in need of a repaint. I contacted the guys at Peninsula Cycles in White Rock. They would pack and ship off the frame, for the repaint, to Marinoni in Terrebonne, Quebec and afterwards build it.

I chose medium blue (sadly, no longer offered on their site) with white banding keeping the old script for the traditional look. My inspiration came from the Italian Ferretti team of the seventies, here. Where they used a striking medium blue on their De Rosa's.

You may have notice, I now have a link on the top menu with a concise collection of imagery about my restoration experience. And, on the left margin I invite you to go ahead and click on my Marinoni image to see the full restoration project.

Planet Merckx

In 1968, Eddy Merckx moved to the Italian Faema team from the Peugeot team and it payed dividends.

Merckx praised riding in Italy, saying it was due to better structure, organisation and medical supervision. And, his domination really started with a huge win in the 1968 Paris-Roubaix. He would be the first Belgium rider to win the 1968 Giro d'Italia.

Wearing the World Champion rainbow jersey, Merckx was unstoppable. Unlucky Herman Van Springel was the only rider to challenge Merckx, losing in the final sprint.

The Barracuda Bites

Winter training for Christophe Le-Mével of the newly announced Team Garmin-Barracuda.

In six days, the Santos Tour Down Under begins the 2012 season and Garmn-Barracuda will be there with the new team kit (liking the name and medium blue). It doesn't look like Le-Mével is on the TDU team but I'm liking Ryder Hesjedal's chances of a stage win, perhaps the uphill finish in Willunga Hill will start off his season on a high note.

Forza!... Tifosi!

Finally! I had the chance to test ride my new Tifosi Forza Glasses!

I purchased these cool looking sunglasses over the holidays to replace my old Ryders. A very good change as my old Ryders were destined for the trash. A surprise break in our wintry grey forecast to a much needed sunny day got myself back on my Marinoni headed up my favorite Burnaby Mountain.

These Tifosi's (like the name) score huge points for lightness (I don't notice them on), fit/comfort and good looks. They are single lens glasses and protect for 100% of UVA, UVB and UV400 rays.

Kudos to Tifosi for a good, functional design and very comfortable pair of sunglasses, already my favorite pair. I have a different pair with interchangeable red lenses that I use on cloudy days.

And, one last bonus; they're included with the perfect hard case to keep the Forza's in good shape and a thoughtful microfiber cleaning bag to wipe them when dirty.

He will keep it for 17 days!

The first time I had the pleasure to watched Steve Bauer, was his convincing win at the 1982 Canadian National Championship Road Race in Edmonton.

Watching him control the race and zip up the steep Emily Murphy hill as if it was a training ride ... I had to do a double take. He dominated that race.

I knew, from that time, this talented rider was destined to ride, one day... the Tour de France.

Cycling guru, Fred Mengoni started his top level cycling team (G.S. Mengoni) lasting from 1981 to 1988. Steve Bauer, Leonard Nitz, Doug Shapiro were some of the top riders to wear the white and blue Mengoni colours.

G.S. Mengoni often went head to head with the 7-Eleven cycling team and won. An example is Bauer beating out Davis Phinney to win the 1984 United Texas Tour. Bauer shone brightly taking the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in a photo-finish with Alexi Grewal. Bauer's big star shone brighter still becoming Canada's first rider to medal (bronze) at the 1984 World Road Race Championships in Barcelona.

The World's best cycling team, La Vie Claire, signed him and he entered the big one, his first Tour de France in 1985. Thrusted into a top team to support Greg LeMond and Bernard Hinault, Steve Bauer didn't disappoint. La Vie Claire powered to win stage 3's TTT to Fougères and Hinault clinched his fifth Tour.

Steve Bauer's star quality quickly escalated with a fantastic and powerful hold on the Young Rider's White Jersey for most of the race finishing an exceptional 10th overall in his first Tour.

Colombian Heroes

Lately, I've been thinking about les grimpeurs of the Tour de France, the fragile stick thin riders that are a marvel to watch dancing up that mountain. The specialist climbers.

The Colombian national team were given an invitation in the 1983 Tour. The globalized Tour. Virtually unknown they gave it a go in their daunting first Tour attempt, with Alfonso Flores as captain. Before the race, some even considered Flores, the winner of the 1980 Tour de l'Avenir, a dark horse. Unfortunately, Flores abandoned but team mate, Patro Jimenez showed his gift for climbing. He would be the first Colombian rider to wear the coveted KOMs jersey, wearing it for five days.

I first watched the 1983 Tour out of curiosity and in 1984, I watched with interest, the savy Colombian amateur team explode as Luis Herrera won L'Alpe d'Huez. Becoming the first stage win by a Colombian, non-European, and amateur.

This is enjoyable footage I've never seen of the 1984 race by French television. The fact, the Colombians were viewed as exotic riders and blamed for their clumsiness was the on going perception at the time. Luis Herrera helped changed that... becoming a Colombian hero!

DIY Bike Stand

I talked to my friend Jim and I asked him whether he would like to make me a bike stand in exchange for work on his garage. He agreed, and soon we'll sit down and talk bike stand designs.

If there's one person that can create this, it's Jim. After all, he's a darn good wielder.

My DIY idea is for a portable bike stand able to set up quickly and be solid enough to hold my 20 something pound Marinoni. I'm already tired thinking of my next bike cleaning session having to squat and twist my body, in uncomfortable positions, to perform basic bike maintenance.

Fausto Coppi

Fausto Coppi died, from malaria, 52 years ago today.

Revered as the Campionisimo, at his peak the rider oozed style and greatness...

"It is proven fact that between 1946 and 1954 Fausto Coppi was never caught once he had escaped from the peloton." Pierre Chany, Cycling Journalist.

"He seems to caress rather than grip the handlebars, while his torso appears permanently fixed by screws to the saddle. His long legs extend to the pedals with the joints of a gazelle. At the end of each pedal stroke his ankles flex gracefully, a movement that would be wonderful to analyze in slow motion on a cinema screen - all the moving parts turn in oil. His long face appears like the blade of a knife as he climbs without apparent effort, like a great artist painting a water color." Andre Leducq, two time Tour winner."

When Fausto Coppi passed away he was only 40 years old. The cycling world is still in mourning.

2012: Passo di Giau

Guy gave me an excellent New Year's gift in the form of a mini poster of the 2012 Giro d'Italia.

It really captures the beauty and grandeur of the mountains, inspiring to say the least with a cool pink rendering of the impressive Passo di Giau (jowl).

Stage 17 will feature four big peaks, including two over two thousand metres. The menacing and beautiful, Passo di Giau in the Dolomites will be climbed ...all 2,236 metres of it.

New Years Eve Ride

Taking a pit stop...

Unseasonably sunny in December.

Guy and I closed this busy 2011 year with our UBC ride stopping at Cafe Zucherro on fourth Avenue.

It was unseasonably dry and sunny, despite the cold conditions (felt like 0C), it was a perfect day for a ride. A good time to chat about news, have a double espresso and ride. Cafe Zucherro may well be our favorite cafe stop along our UBC loop. I almost forgot how good their double espresso is... absolutely gold.

The burly Italian barista, once again, was most welcoming and colorful, keeping us entertain. We were the only cyclists in the cafe and he quickly zero in on us saying he wouldn't ride in such cold weather. All I can think was, "Wear layers". He shook our hands and wished us a Happy New Year. What a gentleman!

Winter riding is about quality and we took advantage of the dry road conditions for some relaxation hammering. I always like the NW Marine Drive hill, not steep but very scenic overlooking English Bay. We stopped to admire the view on SW Marine Drive and with the sun breaking through the clouds it was pretty special.

I used my newly acquired Endura Roubaix Gloves and they performed admirably. One small critique is that the gloves are not cut high enough to ward off the cold chill. All in all, I'm happy with them providing enough grippy plastic on the palms and fingers for a comfortable and secure ride. Importantly, there is terry cloth on the thumb to wipe off excess sweat.

Used my Endura Roubaix gloves (love the name) for the first time...

Also, the brand new ITM tape is extra nice!

It's fun when we're riding at a good clip, I call it floating. We flew onto Kent Ave then I made my turn, for home, on the Ontario Street Bikeway. A memorable and fun ride to end 2011!

So, with only a few hours left we'll all look forward to 2012...

On Winter Riding

No one to chase.

Winter riding is something I think about and seldom do.

I try to get out on the bike as often as I can.

Depending upon where you live, the weather is a factor whether you go out or not. I'm thinking work falls a close second in terms of deciding whether you have the time or energy to ride. We all work right? Just going out, breathing in fresh air and riding is the name of the game (and pleasure) at this time of year. The intensity is lessen but fundamentally sound to go out for a comfortable spin. Extra fun if you go with a friend or more. I'm thinking of the expresso or beer stop along the way.

Solo riding is good too. Leaving your stress behind and riding with your own thoughts is the perfect therapeutic environment. I don't remember how many times I rode by myself and came back feeling rejuvenated!

I'm lucky, I suppose, living on the west (wet) coast having just to cope with another riding day of wet gloomy weather. A rain cape, a warm Galstudio winter cap and water proof booties does the trick. Two years ago, we had a freak huge snowstorm and I can remember being house bound for about ten days. It rarely snows here but when it does, Vancouver becomes somewhat comical, snowed in and cycling is non-existent.

Which comes to tomorrow, Guy and I will finally ride together. I'm thinking hard here... we haven't rode together since last August. I'll be testing Christmas gear I received and I'll make sure to bring along my camera to take pictures for an upcoming post.

A New Years eve ride, and although the forecast is calling for sunny skies (I'd better check that again) it's going to be good riding with Guy .... again!

Recovery

Great news for Mauricio Soler...

As he moves up on his road to recovery, the Colombian government, the Coleportes body which sponsors the Coldeprotes Pro Continental team, will provide financial/medical support for the injured grimpeur.

A wonderful Christmas present after his return home to Bogota. It's too early to say if the 28 year old will be back on the bike but I have hopeful optimism.

I'd love to see him back!

Juan Mauricio Soler is back in the news, returning to Colombia after a long recovery from that near fatal crash during the summer's Tour de Suisse.

Before his crash on June 16, it seemed the former 2007 KOMs Tour de France winner had shaken off his long history of injuries and illnesses by winning stage 2 Crans-Montana on June 12. Of course, his road to recovery will be a daunting one full of challenges, but I remain hopefully optimistic.

But, seeing him in the video was enough to put a smile on my face. He's come far and headed, I hope, back to what he was ...a great climber!

First Test: Mudflap

Today was absolutely a beautiful day for a ride (sunny, windy & 5˚C).

In a way, a first test for my new rear mudflap. As you see the road conditions were mainly dry. Of course, there were huge sections of roads with plenty of water/road grime to happily negotiate through.

Carolle and I designed it measuring 7 inches long and 3 inches wide. It's 4 mil ply. You can make it longer if you choose. The natural bend of the fender presented a concern of how it would sit. Coroplast is a rigid corrugated plastic that is 100% waterproof. You can purchase it at most art supply shops.

Carolle's expertise working with the material for the special events industry was an asset. We decided a thin piece (that sits on the flat channel inside of the fender) of coroplast inlayed 3 inches and glued (hot glue gun needed). No bolts, zip ties or rivets needed. We cut the mudflap so it's one piece for strength.

To fit around the natural curve of the fender, Carolle scored the plastic stopping 2 inches from the base. We used an Xacto blade (make sure it's sharp or it won't cut) gliding along the edge of a steel ruler being careful not to cut through the plastic. Having the coroplast as flat as possible, at the base, is important to deflect as much of the spray from the faces of fellow riders.

After my windy ride I had a closer look and the mudflap hung in there solidly and looking at the grime collected... it did it's job!

curve of the fender.

I was helping my friend Duane move and he gave me three full sheets of coroplast.

It's an amazing material made of corrugated plastic that's strong and waterproof. In the talented hands of Carolle, she was able to craft a nice and wide piece and fit it on my too small rear fender to give it a proper mudflap.

Now, where's the rain? The test ride upcoming!

Ferdi Kubler is a living legend. He is the oldest Tour champion alive, at the age of 92.

During his riding days he was known as 'The Cowboy' with a love for the Stetson hat. From 1950-1952 was his most successful years on the bike rewarding him with huge wins: 1950 Tour, Liege-Bastogne-Liege (1951, 1952), Fleche Wallonne (1951, 1952), Tour de Suisse (1951), Tour de Romandie (1951) and World Road Champion (1951).

GreenEDGE Hit Squad

Now that Svein Tuft has signed for the Australian 'hit squad' GreenEDGE, the Canadian TT champion seems to be finally where he wants to be.

After reading the enjoyable and informative article by Anthony Tan from Velonews, I'm left to ask ...how far can Tuft go?

He's 34, not exactly young in cycling years, but he has the uncanny ability to do well in the time trial. He's a seven time National Time Trial Champion, a silver medal in the 2008 World Championship TT, prologue win at the Eneco Tour and second overall at the Tour of Denmark (including TT win).

This year he rode for Steve Bauer's TeamSpiderTech and achieved a rare double winning both the road and TT National Championships. He also won a one day Belgium semi classic, the Grand Prix Zottegem. Proving, perhaps a big classic win is in the cards. Can his time with Steve Bauer bear fruit? Remember Bauer was a master on the cobbles, he came close finishing second in the 1990 Paris-Roubaix.

I call the GreenEDGE team a 'hit squad' comprising of an impressive group of top riders hungry for victories in their inaugural season. Joining Tuft will be ex-Garmin teammates; compatriot Christian Meier and Julian Dean.

So much left in the tank for Tuft and exciting he's riding on the GreenEDGE team ...quietly plotting further success on the World Tour stage.

The 1950s was cycling's Golden Age.

A who's who list of exciting heroes emerged from the Tour de France...

In 1950, the Swiss Ferdi Kubler was a TT devil winning the overall and proclaimed by Jacques Goddet as a 'cycling demon'. His compatriot, Hugo Koblet, in 1951 nicknamed the 'Pedaller of Charm' won solo to Agen crossed the line, ran a hand through his hair calmly checking his stopwatch, waited for his exhausted rivals. Koblet invented a matinee idol look known as the 'Italian Style' and won with a unique panache.

Fausto Coppi returned in 1952 and annihilated everyone winning by almost half an hour, rode magnificently taking three great mountain stages. The great Italian was in a race of his own. Tour organizers re-invented the race in a huge way. A search for new terrain led to new mountain passes - Alpe d'Huez, Mont Ventoux, Puy-de-Dome and Sestrières - bringing more grandeur to the event.

It was still an innocent time, the cyclists raced with collars, front pockets with buttons, metal bidons stoppered with cork. Just like Hugo Koblet, they wrapped goggles around their arm.

The French public was yearning for a hero to call their own.

Despite saddle sores, Breton, Louison Bobet triumphed in 1953 finally winning the Tour on his sixth attempt. In 1954, the Tour started for the first time outside France, in Amsterdam. Bobet was there winning the stage to Briancon and extending enough time over a threatening Kubler. He won his second Tour and the hearts of France. Federico Bahamontes was making his first Tour debut in dramatic fashion. His talent was riding fast uphills but he was a poor descender. He stole an ice cream from an ice cream seller, ate it at the roadside waiting for his chasers. Bahamontes quirky demeanor caught the attention of the public and his teammates. "He's a very good climber, but completely mad," said teammate Jesus Lorono. Bahamontes climbed well, so well he won his first mountains classification.

French hero, Bobet came back in 1955, again riding through the pain of saddle sores to be the first to win the Tour three times in succession. He became a Tour legend. In the oven of the Ventoux, a heat exhausted Ferdi Kubler had to stop at a café, got back on his bike ...riding in the wrong direction. He abandoned and never rode the Tour again.

The French came back in 1956, this time Roger Walkowiak surprised all with his resiliency and smart tactics to win. The following year, in 1957, the time trial was the domain of the young genius Jacques Anquetil (22), together with a super strong French team won his first Tour. In 1958, Monsieur Chrono pulled out due to a pulmonary infection giving way to a splendid Charly Gaul who won all three TT stages and the brilliant stage in the freezing rain to Aix-les-Bains. After 24 stages without a rest day, Gaul was the convincing overall winner. Federico Bahamontes came to the 1959 Tour looking to excel in the mountains. He won the mountain TT up the Puy de Dome and distance himself from the infighting of the French teams to win his second KOM's and become Spain's first Tour winner. As the 1959 Tour came to a close, two former French Tour stars ended their careers; Louison Bobet abandoned and Jean Robic was disqualified at Chalon-sur-Saone for missing the time limit.

After reading the insightful article, The Italian Job by Bruce Barcott I could never be more steadfast for my devotion for Campagnolo.

I'm part of the middle age set, raised on the passion and the old world charms of the Italian component maker. The lure intense. The Vicenza based component maker is endearing to me and represents a business oddball. Staying true to their roots, especially in this profit margin, out-sourced mad business world, maintaining manufacturing from Italy and Romania. While Shimano and Sram chase profits offshore.

In 1927 Tuillio Campagnolo found himself in great difficulty, on the assent of Croce d'Aune Pass, he tried to take off the rear wheel to change the gear ratio. The legend tells us that he said, "Something has to be changed back there." He patented his first release in 1929. In 1933 he founded Campagnolo becoming the choice of the greats: Coppi, Bartali, Merckx, Hinault...

When I was measured for my custom 1987 Marinoni, I was so happy to partner the Italian/Quebec frame with Campagnolo. It was a no brainer. Like the majority riders during the eighties I was weaned on Campy as the traditional choice. Components exotic and beautifully crafted to last and made from old world artisans. Ok, I'm a romantic by heart. I couldn't afford the top of the line Super Record but I knew the Nuovo Record gruppo would suit me just fine. It worked heartily and solidly for me for over twenty years. I know it's only cold metal but there's a warm soul lurking here.

Now, I've still kept it Campy changing to the new Veloce groupset, going to new technology foregoing the down tube shifters and adopting the Power Torque System. I've gone for their amazing aluminum Khamsin wheels. The result a second marriage as good as the first time.

The heart and soul is the same. And that's where Campagnolo will endure crafting well made, highly innovative components. Perhaps they can't match their competitors profits but for 78 years... they thankfully continue to serve their passionate and loyal fans.

Steve Bauer rode for GS Mengoni in the early eighties and he often tussled with Team 7-11.

Geoff Drake, the author of the excellent book Team 7-Eleven, stated, "Canadian powerhouse Steve Bauer was a constant antagonist for the the 7-Elevens until he finally joined the team."

I remember reading a issue of Winning, Bauer and Davis Phinney were rivals but in this particular criterium (I wish I could remember the name of the race) they rode against European Pros. Together the two amateurs put on a good show forcing the Pros on their heels. I believe Phinney won that. Eddy Merckx was there and commented that the Pros should always win against the amateurs. In this case the amateurs got the better of the Pros.

Bauer and Phinney would often duel against each other in the American criterium circuit often jostling for victory.

In 1990, Bauer joined the 7-Elevens and came very close to winning Paris-Roubaix, losing by one centimeter to Eddy Planckert. At the 1990 Tour, Bauer went on a tear on stage one and was part of a four man breakaway finishing 10 minutes on the field. Together with a strong prologue and team time trial, Bauer held the coveted yellow jersey until stage 10.

I'm finding some time in my busy schedule to finally go out and enjoy the simple pleasures of cycling.

Yesterday, was a rare sunny day and cold (around freezing) so I set out for a ride around the University of BC and up the winding 4th Ave hill. I had a quick pasta lunch before leaving thinking it would give me enough to sustain my 20 mile spin. It did but my legs were heavy. Call it lack of riding.

These days my riding is all about just going out on the bike and enjoying. It's so fun just spinning and looking out at the ships in the bay and breathing the cold crisp air.

One indispensable piece of cycling attire is the cap. A must need item. And with the weather temperature steadily dropping, the winter cap is part of my cycling wardrobe. This is my second test ride with the new 100% Wool Flemish winter cycling cap and it scores big time on my scale.

We decided to produce another all wool winter cap after the crazy success of the the limited edition Brits cap (now discontinued).

I have two wool cycling jerseys and there's an intrinsic value to wearing wool. It provides warmth, wicks perspiration and feels and fits well. Our Flemish winter cap is lightweight and so warm that you can just concentrate and ride. It's my favorite winter cap.

We re-design this new winter cap with two sizes: Small/Medium (21 - 22 1/2") & Medium/Large
(22 1/2" - 24"). So, when ordering please specify size. And we also re-design the ear flap (made from 100% cotton jersey knit) to make a better fit.

It's a classic cap in classic plaid, the type of cap that would be well suited even in Flanders. My enjoyable cold weather rides in and around Vancouver... is more enjoyable with the 100% wool Flemish winter cap!

The cycling world can thank the French for panache, the perfect word to describe French style. If it sounds a tad on the pretentious side, perhaps it is. I'm grateful for the French contribution to cycling forever evolving, changing and staying the same.

Here's a wonderful video from Peloton, in fact, there's a Canadian element. Two of my favorite riders; Dominique Rollin (FDJ) and David Veilleux (Europcar) are here on their careful preparation and aftermath of last year's Paris-Roubaix.

As I sit back after a hectic day 3 of Make It, I'm so pleased of the very positive response from our new and returning customers.

I'm humbled that a customer from last year's show returned back to purchase three more of my cyclingart postcards and asked if I had larger prints to offer. I mentioned to him that it can be arranged.

I met Cam, who is a kindred spirit, a lover of cycling, owner of Italian steel (Rossin) and a real true enthusiast of the sport. It must've been his Campagnolo Record gruppo t-shirt that gave it away. We had a nice chat of his trip, last year, to watch the big three cobble classics: Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders and Ghent Wevelgem. He said it was so amazing to watch Cancellara fly up the Muur being chased by Boonen.

And we talked after he bought one of my postcard's depicting Steve Bauer in Paris-Roubaix of his daring ride to an epic finish against Eddy Planckaert.

It was no surprised that Steve Bauer loved Roubaix. He was stocky and strong, made for the cobbles. When he turned professional, Roubaix was the raced he loved and he made his home in Belgium. In 1988 he finished eighth, a solid result enough to give him the confidence to one day win it.

In 1990, Bauer was there gliding over the cobbles believing and making it happen only to lose by a centimeter by Planckaert.

Then, Cam said while he was in one of Belgium's cobble classic races, he mentioned he was Canadian and some locals said one name, of course out of deep respect... "Steve Bauer."

Thinking of the Off Season

The cycling season is over and most riders have elected to ease off the bike or just stop for a much needed break.

Now, if you're fortunate enough to live in an area where you can avoid the nasty weather conditions (ie snow), then you've got it made. So continuing to ride, to keep the much needed fitness level up, is the perfect off season tonic.

Today was -2C dry and happily snow free, in Vancouver. I couldn't go out for a ride but I did watch as a group of two wheel hearty souls rode by my front window for a chilly morning training ride. How I wish I could do the same only that this is our busiest time of the season, that means work before pleasure.

But there are exceptions. With the recent news of Yaroslav Popvych back to November training, a month earlier than usual to peak for Paris-Roubaix is ... a rare breed. He plans to help Cancellara win and get a good result. Now that's commitment.

As I sit. pondering when I can fit in a couple of hours for a ride, I can smile that someone, somewhere is out there pounding the pavement with their two wheeled partner.

At this point, just thinking of my next ride ...makes me happy!

There was a Belgian train moving fast in the 1921 Tour.

No one could catch him. His name was Léon Scieur.

Scieur was a close friend to compatriot, Firmin Lambot. He started racing at the age of twenty-two, and 11 years later started his 5th Tour de France. Scieur was a protégé of Lambot. and Lambot had introduced Scieur into professional cycling. What are friends for?

Both men were a by product of their land, they were former labourers from the tough Flemish Ardennes. The early twenties was the domain of the Belgian riders of the Tour: Lambot won in 1919/1922 and Philippe Thys in 1920.

The thirty-three year old Scieur was no different, as he held back challengers claiming the yellow jersey after the second stage and keeping it to win the race. French rider Honoré Barthélemy appropriate said, "When Scieur rides in his gear of 5.20 meters (gearing of 45 X 18), it's like having a locomotive in front of you!"

No stopping this train.

Do you remember Dave Stohler, in the famous 1979 movie Breaking Away, on a Ferrari red Masi?

It's one of my all time favorite movies. Dave had a love affair for bicycle racing identifying with the Italian culture. So many memorable scenes: drafting behind a semi-trailer truck, riding against the Cinzano team (getting a pump in the spokes), and riding the Little 500 bicycle race.

Falerio Masi, the founder of Cicli Masi, was a craftsman so skill in frame building he earned the title of ...."The Tailor". He Tailored each bike to the individual needs of each rider.

His bicycles were so well made, many legendary bicycle racers traveled to Milan for his steel wonders. He made his wonderful bikes from Reynolds 531 and Columbus steel. Cicli Masi was located below the Vigorelli velodrome in Milan. The list of names is a Who's Who of great champions... Fiorenzo Magni, Learco Guerra, Gastone, Nencini, Louison Bobet, Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Rik Van Looy, Roger Riviere, Vittorio Adorni, Felice Gimondi, Frederico Bahamontes, Jose Manuel Fuente, Tom Simpson, Ferdinand Bracke... just to name a few.

Contractual obligations prevented some from having Masi on their frames. Coppi rode a Bianchi but it really was a Masi. Van Looy's Masi said "Superia". And, Merckx's Peugeot and Faema bike was pure Masi.

In 1972, Masi moved his company to Carlsbad California, sold the Cicli Masi name and trademark to American investors. And what about Dave's catchy Ferrari red Masi? It was a Gran Critierium!

Raymond Poulidor rode 14 Tours and finished 12, second place three times and third place five times. An amazing record in itself and he never once wore the yellow jersey.

In 1973 he almost lost his life careening down the Col de Portet d'Aspet falling into a ravine. Jacques Goddet, the race director, helped pull him out. Pou Pou abandoned.

I was researching the 1989 Amstel Gold Race about Steve Bauer and Claude Criquielion and discovered this excellent but short video of the race.

Not to take anything from the fine solo win by Belgium Eric Van Lancker, the race for second was a sprint royale between to old foes from the eighties. Not soon as Van Lancker crossed the line for a brilliant victory, Bauer and Criquielion found themselves, once again in familiar territory.

This time Criquielion outlasting Bauer, each rider was exceptionally strong at the finish. And as Movember is in full swing... a great image of Eric Van Lancker in full stache 1980's style with Team Fangio!

Our handmade Brits winter cycling cap is made of 100% wool. And we originally thought that working with this fiber would be difficult. What is usually associated with wool is shrinkage and pilling (when the wool mats together due to friction from washing). Our secret is to wash the wool fabric gently by HAND and press it. This extra step prevents any further shrinkage so you can confidently hand wash your sweaty cap.

This is our first 100% wool cap made. And by the excellent and overwhelming feedback from our customers we are pleased to announce that we will be working more with 100% wool and other natural fibers.

I love the Brits cap so much I had to bargain with Carolle for my own (above image). Wool is a rare natural fibre that will retain it's warmth even when damp. So I plan to sweat in mine.

Brotherhood of the Stache: Jeff Bernard

Jean-François Bernard was placed in the uncomfortable position to be heir to Bernard Hinault.

That's tons of pressure for any rider acclaimed as the next great French cycling star. As it was, Jeff Bernard raise the bar ever closer by wearing the maillot jaune and winning two stages, both time trials, in the 1987 Tour de France. That's the dreaded Mont Ventoux time trial where he put in a pure power performance his face masked in pain and courage to win from climber, Lucho Herrera (second at 1'39"). He finished a brilliant third overall behind Stephen Roche and Pedro Delgado. Perhaps he was destined for the coveted title of successor to the Badger.

But things changed for Jeff Bernard. In the 1988 Giro he crashed in a tunnel injured his back and abandoned the race after winning three stages. Then a knee operation that required months of recuperation was the beginning of the end and his leadership role of the 1988-1990 Toshiba team was on tender hooks with very few wins.

In 1991 he joined Banesto, not as a leader, but a domestique to Miguel Indurain and Pedro Delgado. Bernard was comfortable in the less pressurized role as worker helping Indurain to Tour victories.

In a 1993 L'Equipe interview Bernard said, "I'll never be leader. I can't be someone that you can count on 100 percent and if you ask that of me, I lose half my power."

As Movember (pls donate here) continues, Jeff Bernard gets my nod as a member of the brotherhood of the stache remembered not as a leader but a highly, talented hard worker.

Fabulous World of Cycling-1983 Season

Bernard Hinault won the 1983 Fleche Wallonne dominating the race wearing a special jersey.

It's hard not to be captivated by the impressive results of the Badger. It's hard not to put down Richard Moore's equally captivating book, Slaying The Badger.

Hinault already won the 1979 Fleche Wallonne, and the Badger was claws at the ready controlling the race from start to win at the end in Huy.

Interestingly the picture is Hinault wearing a black Renault jersey, making him look more lethal and aggressive. I've posted a video of the race and notice LeMond and Madiot both wearing the normal striped jersey. And, note the Badger logo's on his hairnet, Cinelli stem and headtube badge.

It's time for Movember.

My second year growing the 'stache to help raise awareness for men's health, specifically prostrate cancer. I read an alarming statistic that 1 in 7 men will have prostrate cancer. I'm ready to grow my mo, for the entire month of November, helping to change the face of men's health.

It's always difficult for me to grow a stache but given the time frame I manage to cultivate one on my upper lip.

Great Ride: The Brits Winter Cycling Cap

What a positive response after launching the Brits Winter Cycling Cap!

Carolle and I managed, from our leftover 100% British wool supply, to produce the last 6 caps currently on our Etsy site. Unfortunately, our supplier has no more stock but we did produce a small run of 14 caps. The first week we sold 7 caps and the response has been overwhelming from our Etsy feedback page...

Really nice craftsmanship. I'm so pleased with it, and I'll definitely be back for a summer cap. The service was great also. Fast delivery and a nice hand-written note for that personal touch!

Decided last night to treat myself to a lovely Brits Winter cap - only to find they've all gone! Is that really it for the Brits? Have I lost out because I didn't take Richard's warnings of 'Limited Edition' seriously enough? Guess that'll teach me not to dither in future!

Carolle can spot a very good fabric she can smell from a mile away. And I look at it from a cyclists point of view; style and function. When Carolle saw this fabric, there was only a few meters left and end of a roll. The first reaction was right away this cap can be a winner. Especially, with the 100% British Wool trim woven in the fabric construction it's a definitely sign of fabric high quality.

Carolle babied it gently hand washing and pressing it. I was under the impression that 100% Wool requires dry cleaning. I was wrong. We prewash all of our fabric to make sure it will not shrink and after a good sweat (ride) it in you can wash it gently by hand and let it air dry.

SOLERing on a new road

One man, who I respect, carries himself well in the face of adversity is Mauricio Soler.

The Colombian rider spent the last 4 months in hospital after a near fatal accident on stage 6 of the Tour du Suisse. Like many of you I feared for his life. Good news, he's released from Navarra hospital and at home in Pamplona with many rounds of painful rehab ahead of him.

Watching him win stage 2 to Crans-Montana then wearing the leader jersey was extra special and proved that he was on the comeback trail to brilliance. I remember his amazing win to Briancon and winning the polka dot climbers jersey in the 2007 Tour de France, got my attention that a dawn of an new age of Colombian grimpeurs are back.

I wonder if he will ever return as the bike rider we remember him by?

But, there are hints, if not confident words to believe in miracles...

Soler's wife Patricia said, "Doctors tell us that the spirit of a cyclist is also serving him well for his recovery."

And Mauricio Soler said, "I'm putting all my energy into this, but it has to be this way, I don't see any other one. We have to be patient, only time will tell about that. It would be fantastic to return riding, but now I'm most interested on my own recovery."

Farewell to the Race of the Falling Leaves

Autumn,

the traditional... change.

The passing of the Tour of Lombardy is symbolic like the change of seasons.

For 2012, it changes name to Il Lombardia and will move from the traditional October to September. This will occur the first Saturday after the World Championships. The UCI claims the move may make the race more competitive as riders come to Italy with World Championship form.

For me, the Fall is time of transformation; leaves turn red, cooler temperatures, and fewer rides.

I always admire the tradition of the Tour of Lombardy. Remembered as the grand finale of the season the perfect race to end the racing season, with the enduring nickname race of the falling leaves. This wonderful race still remains as the last Monument of the season but loses it's Autumn luster to the new upstart Tour of Beijing.

And the date change would mean a new nickname... the thought of it already has me reeling.

Veteran Takashi Miyazawa will ride for World Tour team, Saxo-Bank-Sungard in 2012.

Haven't heard of him?

Miyazawa is just a handful of talented Japanese riders in the pro peloton. He's 33 years old and rode this year for Pro Conti team, Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli. This season has proved fruitful, he won the Izegem Koerse and finished fifth in Paris-Brussels.

But before he joins his first World Tour team, this Sunday he lines up to ride the Japan Cup where he can do some damage. Known as a puncheur, Miyazawa is perfect for the short steep climbs. The Japanese fans will go ballistic if he does win it. Remember his attacking style at Milan-San Remo this year?

I'll give credit to Bjarne Riis for signing the veteran and giving him the chance to become part of a World Tour team.

A very good move in the right direction for World Tour stardom for Takashi Miyazawa.

Hans gave me this amazing photographic magazine of the Tour called, Tour Iconic Images.

Inside there are many fine images by the famous Paris-based picture agency, Presse Sports. Here's a fantastic image of Frenchman Albert Bourlon. I did some research and happily discovered this striking image of Bourlon taken during stage 14 Carcassonne to Luchon. The stage was long... 253 km long and Bourlon broke away almost from the start and rode solo for the duration of this hot long stage, to win the longest solo in post-war Tour history.

I like this image of a bygone era, a time of; very long usually hot stages, wool jerseys with front pockets, dust goggles to protect from the hazardous dirt roads and tin bottles stoppered with corks.

Like many riders of his time, his cycling career was cut short due to the intervening years of the Second World War. I believe Albert Bourlon is still alive today, he would be 94 years old.

The exciting 2012 Tour de France route was presented today along with an old favorite...

Le Coq Sportif returns as the official jersey. Magnifique! The French icon clothing manufactuer first supplied team jerseys at the 1951 Tour.

Bernard Hinault and French tennis great, Yannick Noah presented the new yellow jersey. I'm reading, Slaying The Badger by Richard Moore and interestingly these two French champions were the last of their kind. Yannick Noah was the last Frenchman to win the French Open in 1983 and Hinault was the last time a French rider won Le Tour in 1985.

Both men, sporting icons from the eighties looked pumped and showcased the new yellow jersey. Yannick Noah is a popular singer and of course, Bernard Hinault works with the Tour de France organization.

Giro di Lombardia

Hurricane Oliver...

That was an exciting final Giro di Lombardia.

Swiss, Leopard-trek rider Oliver Zaugg scored his first professional victory riding into the limelight from domestique to worthy champion.

Making a confident move near the top of the final climb of the Villa Vergana, he distanced himself from Basso, Martin, Rodriguez, Niemiec and Pozzovivio. He said his radio didn't work after his surprised attack and he had no idea of the gap forming. Going full gas he managed an historic win: his first and Leopard-Trek's last win as a team. I enjoy it whenever a domestique has his place in the sun, it rarely happens and when it does... it's marvelous to watch.

Zaugg's kamikaze rush to the line was perfect as he beat a very dangerous, and on form, Dan Martin and Joaquin Rodriguez (3rd) by eight seconds. Mark my words, Dan Martin is a major threat to win a monument and it will be sooner than later. Honorable mention goes to Ivan Basso for a smart and strong fourth place.

A great finish to my second favorite Monument, Paris-Roubaix being the first, next season it changes dates to September 29. There's also a name change to Il Lombardia and ends as the grand finale of the season. Along with the new name change must surely come a new nickname. I couldn't guess what to call it. I was so set admiring it's traditional nickname "the classic of the falling leaves."

I'm trying to convince myself the change will be good.

After the world championship road race in Copenhagen, Michael Barry mentioned or didn't mention where he might end up next season.

I was left wondering, and I'm sure most of you who watched, that his days with Sky maybe over. Well, he's re-signed with Sky along with Juan Antonio Flecha and Christian Knees. Boss, David Brailsford couldn't be happier to sign the three world-class talents and to have them continue their careers with Team Sky.

Barry rode very well this season, notably in the Giro d'Italia (54th), GP de Québec (14th), GP de Montréal (54th) and Tour of Beijing (14th overall).

I'm looking forward to seeing Michael Barry return in the primary role as the experienced domestique. A role he made 'work' for him.

And, if experience is a key to success then Sky has it in aces!

Meier Going Over The Edge

The new GreenEDGE cycling team has signed Christian Meier.

A very good move for the former 2008 Canadian Road Champion and 2007 National Espoir Road Champion. He will move from the US United Healthcare team and join a star studded roster on the much anticipated Australian owned cycling team.

Twenty-six years old, Meier will reunite with Svein Tuft and, I believe, for further success. Both Canadians rode together for Garmin-Cervelo and Symmetrics Cycling Team.

The GreenEDGE team looks ready for the World Tour and that means the top races, a fine opportunity for Meier to grow and win in!

Merckx's Masi

One item of interest that I discovered of Eddy Merckx's 1967 season with Peugeot-BP- Michelin was his fixation for his bike. Thanks to one of my favorite websites on vintage bicycles: velo-pages.com

Merckx was well known for his obsessive tinkering of his bicycles. His wife, Claudine said that he would awake in the middle of the night to go re-measure something on his bike. A well known worrier, Merckx had to have his bikes perfect. His bouts with insomnia were many compared with his equally many victories on the road.

The Cannibal didn't like how the stock Peugeot PX-10 bikes rode. So, he asked the great frame builder, Faliero Masi to custom build a bicycle. It was badged and painted, of course, in Peugeot decals but at the heart it was all Masi.

It stood out; no chrome forks/rear stays, no black paint on the lugs, and it sported a Masi decal on the seat tube.

During the 1967 season, Merckx showcased his enormous talents winning; Milan-San Remo (he also won in 1966), Trofeo Angelo Baracchi TTT (with Ferdi Bracke), Fleche Wallone, Ghent-Wevelgem, Criterium des As, two stages Giro d'Italia and the World Professional Road Race (Heerlen).

In 1968, he made his big move to the Italian Faema squad settling in comfortably riding his beloved bicycles made by ...Faliero Masi!

On... Sacred Ground

I finished reading the absorbing article, 'Sacred Ground' by Joe Parkin in the Fall issue of Paved Magazine.

My favorite one day race by far is the classic Paris-Roubaix. My first education into the world of cycling was watching (eyes glued) to CBS Sports Sunday Paris-Roubaix 1984. It was the first and not the last time that I witnessed Sean Kelly manhandled every rider over his favorite pave. He easily sprinted past Rudy Rogiers in the hallow Roubaix velodrome, for his first Paris-Roubaix win.

To me, it was my first time watching this mystical race, a bewildering display of endurance racing (7 hours plus), riders struggling and falling over mud slicked pave. A crazy blend of athleticism balancing on the thin line (the width of a tyre) of whether a rider will or will not survive the surreal conditions.

When I saw Kelly and Rogiers entering the cold concrete velodrome I thought what a fitting way to end 7 hours of hell.

A re-birth to Spring...

1896 was the very first edition of this great race first won by the German Josef Fischer. Riding an oversized heavy bike, almost hard to fathom, to win. I understand the Roubaix Velodrome is the third since 1943. I remember in the eighties the organizers decided to move the finish on the road beside the sponsors, Le Redoute office. It never worked the same way, the velodrome providing a near religious ending to cap off an hellish race.

Equally important is what greets the survivors, a deserving shower in the ancient concrete shower cubicles with plaques of former winners to remind them all to return back ...to sacred ground.

Michael Barry is going forwards to a new team for 2012

Last week I posted a post race video (here) of Michael Barry's world championship road race and his plans for the 2012 season.

He actually hinted that his plans were to race but only smiled when asked if he was re-signing for Team Sky.

The good news is that Barry will return for 2012 but he isn't ready to reveal the team he will ride for... at least for now. That's where we can speculate where he will wind up with. He will be 36 this December and will ride his last race of the season for Team Sky at the Tour of Beijing (Oct. 5-9). At the end of this season he will leave Team Sky after three solid seasons as a domestique.

For his new team, he says that he will be playing his role as team captain and domestique. My take is he would fit well into Steve Bauer's Team SpiderTech and it would be a fitting way to end his classy career and also bringing invaluable experience to the Canadian squad. His goal is to make it to the Olympic Games in which I have no doubt he'll do.

No matter which team he'll ride for, we can be happy that the veteran Michael Barry will be returning to his favorite love of cycling... his le metier!

I recently received a comment about our versatile Galstudio recycled rubber inner tube Piccolo Pouch.

Thanks to Kath from the UK who bought one and wrote, "This is a great idea, with cool options. Have you thought of mentioning that rubber keeps the pouch in your pocket?"

It's true. I use one on every ride and because of the rubber it sits securely in the pocket. My pouch safely keeps my keys, ID, some change, cell and tire wrench.

And, along with the Piccolo Pouch I couldn't leave home without my; trusty pump, spare tube and a Galstudio cycling cap... what I call my essentials!

Sit back & enjoy... this is Legendary!

The list of great riders that challenge Eddy Merckx during his Tour de France rule is impressive. In this equally impressive video called, Legends of the Tour de France, four famous men talk about their unique time against the Cannibal. Lucien Van Impe, Joop Zoetemelk, Bernard Thevenet, and Raymond Poulidor battled him but interestingly only one rider became his bête noir... Luis Ocana.

Ocana, equally aggressive had the panache to give Merckx a fright fight in 1971.

When Merckx was active, he ruled with total domination, and behind his peaceful exterior hid a worried and tormented soul. That's what I found in this excellent compendium of his five Tour victories, each one with stunning archival footage that's a joy to watch.

The Tour de France story of Eddy Merckx reads like a great novel. His beginnings full of great promise, dramatically clashing with rivals, always seeming invincible. He rode his last Tour like his first ... as cycling's fiercest competitor!

Canadian Hopeful

More success to come for David Veilleux!

There was a silver lining for the Canadian elite men's team at the world road race.

Twenty-three year old David Veilleux (Europcar) rode his first elite world road race as he finished top Canadian in a solid 19th place. Missing out lead out men; Svein Tuft as an unfortunate victim along with Michael Barry involved in the crash that also gave many favored riders fits to make it back to the fast charging pack. Michael Barry was forced to abandoned due to injury that only left the Canadian team with Veilleux and Tuft to battle on.

Despite the odds Veilleux stayed with the main pack and guided himself to a respectful top twenty. Tuft finished in 139th place.

That was one strong British lead out train instigated by Bradley Wiggins, David Millar, and Ian Stannard.

With a few laps left, I was amazed to see the tireless Wiggins up there pulling the British team. I wonder what he would've accomplished hadn't he not crashed out of the Tour.

Sooo close for third!

My praise goes to the British team for their superiority in controlling the later part of the race and effectively shutting out the rest of the teams from contention. Especially, as Cavendish saw his opening and snaked his way up the inside passing Goss for the right to be called World Champion. Greipel out sprinted Cancellara for a very close bronze. That was an even duel and I thought two bronze medals would be awarded (last years U23 road race here).

But, the British train was running fast (very fast!) and after 3 years of careful planning... the Manx Missile delivered big time!

Thirty-eight year old, Clara Hughes is making a comeback.

She is one of Canada's most decorated Olympians who so far has six medals at the Summer and Winter Games. In fact, at the 1996 Atlanta Games she won bronze in the Time Trial and Road Race.

She left a successful cycling career winning Olympic and world championship medals before leaving cycling in 2003. Now, she's back! With the goal to make the Canadian cycling team for the 2012 London Games. She wants to ride the road race, team pursuit, and the time trial.

Her 2011 season is already on fire. At the Pan American Championships, she won the TT and road race. In May, she won the overall plus two stages at the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico.

She's having a fine world championships finishing fifth in a rainy and windy time trial. Team mate, Tara Whitten finished in fourth... so close to the podium.

Today's road race was quiet with two laps remaining, Hughes animated the less than animated peloton by a gutsy breakaway. At one point I was singing the praises of Hughes getting on that podium because of her daring dash. She had a maximum lead of 44 secs, then the pack reeled to her in for the expected final sprint won for the consecutive year by Giorgia Bronzini of Italy. The top Canadian was Joelle Numainville in 12th.

As for Clara Hughes she placed 103rd. Nowhere close to the podium, but an heroic ride moving her closer to her Olympic goal.

Un Deux!

A French 1-2 occurred today in Copenhagen.

Arnaud Demare and team mate Adrien Petit outsprinted a huge group of hungry U23 riders to score a thrilling victory for French cycling. On the uphill finish the French bided their time for the ultimate win. The French two man train had the extra gas to ride past favored team's Australia and Italy to victory. Britian's Andrew Fenn hung in for an excellent third place bronze finish.

Demare, only 20 years old, will ride for FDJ next season. And could this victory be the start for a new French cycling renaissance?

Rocket Man

Tony Martin beat a stellar field to win the gold in the TT world championship.

Fastest at each split, he even motored past David Millar. The Scotsman could only turn his head from his concentrated tuck ... in disbelief. Martin was 1:30 faster. He was deemed the favorite by many of the media and he hammered home a fantastic time of 53:43.85. I was stunned by the aggressive riding by Cancellara almost running into the barricades only to finish third 1:20.59 behind. I like Bradley Wiggins smooth riding style as he grabbed the silver.

Svein Tuft also put in an awesome effort, riding the flat 46.4 km course to13th-place in 57:19.74

He's confident for the 2012 London Olympics, "For the most part, I am quite content with how I went about. I look at the times and I am happy to be within the fighting times. That keeps me positive and focussed."

Today, no one could beat a more focussed Martin... simply put he was unbeatable!

In his place, Michael Barry gets the nod to ride the coveted world's road race. Rollin injured his right hand and bruised his upper lip. He had very good form this season; top 20 in Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Dwars door Vlaanderen and GP de Québec. Unfortunately for Rollin, will miss his chance to shine what would be his first world's road race. Barry is no stranger to the world championships. He finished 18th in the road race at the 2009 world road race in Mendrisio Switzerland.

A few days ago, 36-year old Carlos Sastre said he had an announcement for today.

The 2008 Tour winner retires today from a 15-year cycling career. This season was successful for his Geox TMC team winning the overall and team classification in the Vuelta. He started the Vuelta as co-leader with Denis Menchov, finished in 20th helping Juan Jose Cobo win the overall.

The move that almost worked...

Stage 20 Vuelta; attacking alone, Sastre's swan song ended

when he was caught with 3 kms left.

Known for his consistency in the Grand Tours, he developed as one of the top stage race riders in his time. Sastre only signed for a year with Geox TMC. Perhaps he already knew that the writing was on the wall. His last season was quiet yet with his hard work ethic along with his team, supported Cobo to overall victory.

I'm sadden he's decided to hang up the bike, his family encouraged him to ride one more season. I thought he would. But, he decided to take the big step down. Long live King Carlos!

Uber Riders: Hushovd & Gilbert

Now that Thor Hushovd and Philippe Gilbert will be teammates on the super charged BMC team in 2012. They'll have to finish this season with one more big race. Before this merger happens there's a certain score to settle. The two uber riders will go for the huge marbles in Copenhagen on September 25th... and they both look set to challenge for the title of World Champion.

Today, Gilbert added to his lengthy 2011 palmares the GP de Wallonie. He masterly showed he has the undeniable class and energy to win on top of the uphill finish. This is his last race before the World Championships and it's difficult to believe he can falter in Denmark.

Should be fun next year!

Thor Hushovd, powerfully won today's hilly stage 4 in the Tour of Britain. A stage win was his goal, now achieved he is eleven days from defending his World Championship road title. Like his friend, Gilbert, he too has won today and shown keen pre-world form. Is this more than a coincidence?

For their new BMC team, Gilbert has stated his goal is to go for the Classic races and Hushovd's biggest goal is to win the Hell of the North. What better way to leave these two uber riders, with two videos, as they prepare for the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

Ryder Hesjedal finished 11th at Sunday's Grand Prix Cycliste de Montéal.

The battle to the finish line wasn't the type of scenario for the Garmin-Cervelo rider. He tried on the last lap leading a chase group trying to reel back in the Costa breakaway. It didn't work and a huge chase group thundered into the final sprint.

Hesjedal ends the race as top Canadian, here's a video ...post race.

Gilbert, Costa & Québec... Bravo!

Philippe Gilbert's master stroke was Friday when he took on a very talented field of riders and powerfully won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec.

Robert Gesink dared to fight back to challenge Gilbert with meters remaining. Towards the finish line the classic strongman had a last over the shoulders glance to see if he was alone. The climber Gesink had taken the final hill and looked close to catching the Belgium champion. It was Gilbert, winning from a late surging Gesink in second and Rigoberto Uran excellently in third.

Michael Barry rode aggressively to help drive the Sky team to stay in contention. And at the end Uran was in the right position for that podium placing. Barry finished in 14th, awarded the top Canadian rider. Gilbert's moment in the sun catapulted him as world's number one in the UCI rankings.

A great day, simply, for the best rider of the season.

A Costa star for Movistar!

Unfortunately, I missed the live race of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal but after work I raced back to watch the highlights.

Rui Faria Da Costa produced an awesome display of coolness to beat Pierrick Fedrigo and a desperate sprint by ... you guessed it Philippe Gilbert in an valiant third.

Earlier in the race, I followed twitter for the live action and read Gilbert and Dominique Rollin fell. Rollin had to abandon but the strongman Gilbert continued on and I thought it wouldn't be his day. He also had a mechanical and I read he was so upset he threw his bike to the side of the road. I wished I've seen that.

Inside the last meters, Costa was today's power guy and blew past an excellent Fedrigo and a locomotive called Gilbert. Costa won into Super-Besse in this year's Tour and said, "My manager Yvon Ledanois told me I was the team's leader with Jose Joaquin Rojas and he said we had gone a long way to go home empty-handed. My stage victory in the Tour de France in Super-Besse remains the highlight of my career but this rates quite close. I never doubted."

Top Canadian went to Ryder Hesjedal, who was marking Gilbert, defending champion Robert Gesink at the front of the peloton and came in 11th. A good ride in a very difficult race to win when it came down to a sprint. He was 27th in Friday's GP de Québec.

I'm proud of the huge Canadian talent and extremely happy how this weekend's racing was so exciting. The honor list today is: David Veilleux (22nd), Michael Barry (54th), Svein Tuft (66th) and Ryan Roth (108th).

Philippe Gilbert gets my last words as he has taken over as world number one ranking from Tour winner Cadel Evans. With his win in Québec City an additional 50 points by finishing third his total is 698, 124 points better than Evans. Two races remain in the 27 event WorldTour season; Tour of Beijing and Giro di Lombardia. When he was on the podium the classy number one ranked rider said, "I had no idea I had so many fans in Canada. It's good for our sport that our fans are not only in Europe."

Well said!

The Whistler Gran Fondo is tomorrow, and today was the last day for Velospoke a consumer cycling show here in Vancouver.

Hans emailed me these pictures and I want to thank him for use of them. I couldn't make it to the inaugural cycling show held in conjunction with the Gran Fondo. You may know the two personalities; that's Bob 'Bobke' Roll and Alex Stieda who both rode for the famous 7-Eleven team during the eighties.

Unfortunately, Hans won't be riding the Gran Fondo as he is recovering from a cycling accident. He took the pictures of the two ex-pros of 7-Eleven and listened to Bobke's funny and entertaining account of the famous 1988 Gavia pass with Andy Hampsten. He was a domestique in delivering warm clothes to Hampsten, surviving (story here) that blizzard stage and finished 61st.

In 1986, Alex Stieda was the first Canadian to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. He finished in 120th his only Tour appearance.

Hans had them sign the new Team 7-Eleven book by Geoff Drake from VeloPress. In fact, our friends at VeloPress are sending Guy and I a copy where we will introduce it for an upcoming 3B's podcast.

Roberts Creek Park

Carolle and I returned from a wonderful six day work/holiday trip on the BC Sunshine Coast where we stayed in the beautiful town of Gibsons.

Of course, I brought my Marinoni looking for a new riding adventure. This is our third time over here and I can say it won't be the last. It's very picturesque, a beautiful small coastal postcard that I can quickly get used to looking at.

One with Chaster Park...

My friend Helene warn me that the roads are extremely narrow to ride on and the cars, at times, too close to cyclists. I told her I'll be visible and will ride with presence of mind. I don't want to boast but I used to be a bike messenger... I can elbow the cars away if they get too close.

With that in mind, and elbows up, I rode along the hilly, narrow Gower Point Road and Ocean Beach Esplanade admiring the Salish Sea. I had no problems sharing the roads with the automobiles, in fact, around tight bends they had to follow me. There was a third element on the roads that was new to me... deer leisurely crossing the road. I saw one pop off from the side of the road. It caught me by surprise because it came from the shadows and darted across to the other side of the road, only a few feet from me. The sound of the clack from it's cloven hoofs on the road is not from a dog. When I rode pass, it ran into a driveway I saw what I thought was a Great Dane, it was the figure of a deer.

It wasn't only about cycling, we also finished a big order and even shipped off cycling caps from the town's little post office. Gibson is also well know for it's clean drinking water and was judged to be the best in the world. It has no after taste and I can say it's very refreshing. There's an outdoor water dispenser where anyone can fill their containers with the liquid gold ...free.

Now I know why it's called the Sunshine Coast, it was sunny and hot and I got in some quality riding time. Many thanks to Helene and Graham for sharing their paradise with us. And, it's only a 40 minute ferry ride ... we'll be back!

Froome vs Cobo: Down to the Wire

What an epic stage!

This exciting Vuelta was fought tooth and nail on stage 17 on the 19 % gradient on top of the Pena Cabarga. Chris Froome dug deep into his depths of his being to pull out a fantastic attack then to lose and regain it to win a stunner of a finish that I haven't seen before.

Inside the last 2 kms the gloves were off and it was an epic battle between leader Juan Jose Cobo vs the up and comer Chris Froome.

Give credit where credit is due, Cobo looked cooked yet came back to dangle close to Froome approaching the line. He still had reserves, like a champion. Froome, like a gladiator, struck his last blow to overtake Cobo on the last bend to score a brilliant victory.

Wiggins lost 39 seconds and is fighting for a podium spot. But, the team leadership goes to domestique Froome who proves to be the stronger Sky rider. Utterly amazing effort by both men as a scant 13 seconds separates Cobo (roja jersey) and second place Froome. You know...there's plenty of action upcoming until Madrid!

David Boily of SpiderTech moved into the yellow leader's jersey at the Tour de l'Avenir (The Tour of the Future).

The young 21 year old Canadian grimpeur has won the KOM classification at the 2011 Giro di Sardegna. Today's stage 3 from Gérardmer to Porrentruy, Boily finished in 6th with the same time as winner Michael Hepburn from Australia.

Keep up the great work, I hope you keep it all the way to Sunday!

The Cobo-Might Maneuver

34 X 32 does it!

It was extraordinary to watch the stage to the top of the extremely steep Angliru.

At one point motorcycles stopped and riders looked eerily close to going backwards.

The hurt locker going up with the 1 km to go flag.

The Queen stage for the Queen size mountain left plenty of riders experiencing their own hurt lockers. On the ugly 22% gradient, Juan Jose Cobo (Geox-TMC), reportedly the only rider with 34 X 32 gearing called it his race and rhythmically rode away ...from everyone else. He seemed to have picked the right gearing or was it his mechanic? His mechanic should receive an extra Estrella!

No matter, with a strong performance from his front leading Geox team (Sastre, Menchov & company), Cobo is the new leader only 20 seconds in front of a superb Chris Froome and 46 seconds from Bradley Wiggins.

The Geox-TMC is impressive and there's still a week of racing left, my question ...can the Cobo lead Geox team keep up the hurt locker clinic?
