Friday File: Spring is Sprung, Legend: Milan-San Remo - My Predictions & Red Dots Cycling Celebrates Spring
A world champion ride...
After three 2nd-place finishes, Giuseppe Saronni
goes solo to win in 1983.
Today is the first day of Spring ...and it's sprung.
The biggest race of the season, so far, starts Sunday. Milan-San Remo (la Primavera) is the first of five prestigious Monuments and, in my opinion, the symbolic start to the cycling season. The weather will most likely play a key role. Rain is in the forecast, and after 293km, could and probably will wear and tear the riders for the final crucial kms. Also, the Via Roma has returned and this classic finish line comes 2km earlier this year, good advantage for any surviving attackers looking to foil the sprinters.
I'm rarely spot on with my picks but here are my predictions of what will be an exciting finish on the Via Roma this Sunday...
I always like an underdog to win and I can see an attacker/puncheur like Philippe Gilbert to sustain his patented quick getaway and hold it for victory. If it comes to an traditional field sprint I'll go for Nacer Bouhanni. This man is one of the top favorites, so if it comes down to a sprint with a small field, Peter 'The Terminator' Sagan will finally appease his Tinkoff-Saxo boss Oleg Tinkov with the first big win of the season. There's a star studded field and only one will win so expect the unexpected on Sunday. It will be fun to watch.
Start List here.
