The Winter Cycling Cap

Phil Anderson, 1984 Het Volk... A soggy, cold, miserably wet day here in Vancouver spurred your author to stay indoors and think about winter cycling caps. I'm trying to find out the origin of the humble winter cycling cap. And as far as I can determine, through my research, is that it's probably from wind swept Belgium. It more than makes sense from the land of wet, rain harshness as an important way for a cyclist to stay warm in inclement conditions. Covering the head is important since 40-45% of body heat is loss from the head. Belgian cyclists can't be wrong. Galstudio's handmade Presta Winter Cycling Cap ... It started with the basic wool brimless cap. Just put on a tuque and ride. And, most likely proceeded with a brim to guard against freezing rain and the cutting wind. photo Cycling Art The above image may look like a desolate and uninviting setting. Really it's the exact opposite. Yesterday's Sunday ride was my first, of this new year, with the FRFuggitivi group. Before I ventured out I made sure to check the front street and back alley was free of ice - which it was. So, off I went on wet roads. The sinister image is the West Coast Chip Plant, where Ontario Street ends and where I meet the New West crew: Guy, Scott, Phil, Dean, Ross, Allan and Matt. Actually the West Coast Chip Plant could double as a movie set - easy. My goal was to aim for 20kms, keep it easy and just go to the coffee stop and return home. But, trouble brewed on the way with Dean signaling a mechanical - his derailleur cable snapped! It really didn't dawn on me until we all stopped and I along with most of us was covered in a layer of road muck. I can imagine hosing down my bike now. Friday File: Headbands vs Cycling Caps, Giro d'Vino, Chapeau Fuente & Campy Nuovo Record

Headbands? Above is a tweet sent from my friends at Road Holland. My earliest recollection is receiving one from frame builder, Giovanni Pinarello as a gift. I brought it back to Canada and just couldn't get use to it on. Many pros adopted it but, in a way, it never looked right. I thought it looked more normal on runners and tennis players (ie. Borg & McEnroe). I quickly embraced and wore out the Metauromobili Pinarello cycling cap I was given. It made more sense, to me, to wear a cycling cap. It was so much more practical. The fact is, the headband was uncomfortable to wear and the cycling cap is a natural fit - perfectly perched on to protect a riders' head from the elements. Definitely a no-brainer...
