Le Dauphiné & the Big Motor!

Big Mig powering through to win the 1995 Dauphiné TT.

This Sunday is the start of the 61st Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré. The French proclaim it as a mini Tour de France. Eight stages including four mountain stages including the nasty Mont Ventoux awaits. There's also a TT and a 42 kilometer ITT. It should prove a handful for the riders and showcase who is prepared for Le Tour. I like that Garmin-Slipstream is including time trial machine, Svein Tuft. I'd like to see him do well especially where he excels, in the time-trials!

Speaking of motors, Miguel Indurain had a huge one, to bag his first Dauphiné in 1995. He did very well as he outclassed specialists; Chris Boardman & Thierry Marie in the time trial. Afterwards, he took his great speed to win an historic fifth Tour. Big Mig did it again, in his final season in 1996. This time he brought down Tony Rominger to beat him in the time trial and convincingly won the Briancon stage. This race was so important to him that he added, "it was one of the ones you had to win!"
