Il Campionissimo: 51 years Ago

January 2nd marked the 51st anniversary of the death of Il Campionissimo, Fausto Coppi. The great man was the greatest rider of his time accomplishing so many great wins. In hindsight, if it wasn't for the interruption of the war, his palmares would be simply ...more astounding.

Coppi raced pro from 1940 to 1959. He was a British prisoner of war in Tunisia in 1943. In 1946, after time away from the bike, he won Milan-SanRemo and as they say, 'the rest is history.'

Journalist, Albert Baker d'Isy wrote of the legend...

"Fausto Coppi had the pure lines of the Greek Acropolis combined with the streamlined fuselage of a modern ariplane."

And, Gazetta dello Sport wrote...

"I pray that the good God will one day soon send us another Coppi."
