Stage5: Closing in on Leducq, Tuft & the Caribou

Andre Leducq...
25 stage wins from 1927-1935.

Mark Cavendish is one stage win away to tie Andre Leducq for third on the list of stage winners. The Manx Missile took care of sprinting business winning stage 5 into Marseille. I bet he will tie Leducq and that would put him closer to the Badger at 28 wins. King Merckx is on top with a record 34 victories. Cavendish looks like his old self and I bet he gets his 25th win on tomorrow's stage 6.

Svein Tuft comments on tactics after stage 5.

I love nicknames and one that's particularly fun is David Veilleux's, nicknamed "Caribou". I guess being born in Quebec that has ...Caribou?

Veilleux has a Quebec accent that makes it difficult to be understood by his French teammates. My partner, Carolle is Quebecoise and she finds it difficult to understand folks from France, too. I understand this and Veilleux's comments make me smile...

"I have to adapt to their French. If they speak my French, they do not understand anything. For the French, I have to soften up my accent. They laugh at me when I speak French."
