Mr. Tranquillo
The 2013 world road race course will be held in Toscana (Tuscany) and promises to be a real grind; 279.6 km in distance, and climbs up the Montecatini Alto (30km), San Baronto (66km) and a 4.6km climb to Fiesole. The course is predicted to be one of the toughest since Bernard Hinault won in Sallanches, France in 1980.
It's hard to believe that this is the first time that the worlds will be held in cycling heartland of Tuscany. The birthplace of these highly familiar cycling stars; Gino Bartali, Alfredo Martini, Fiorenzo Magni, Paolo Bettini and Mario Cipollini.
The hilly course will favor a strong rider... how about Peter Sagan? Already a proven classics rider and very capable over hilly terrain, the Terminator is training in Aspen at altitude, then ride the Tour of Alberta, GP Quebec and Montreal. Then attack the world championship road race on September 29th... with the goal to win it.`

“It’s a different way of doing things but I think it’s the best way for me. Out here there are no real distractions and I can combine some good training on great roads with the benefits of altitude."
I arrived late on Monday and we're at 2400m, so for the first five days I'm going to acclimatise to the altitude and then gradually step-up the intensity of my training. I'm doing two short rides today to try and miss the rain showers. It's about staying tranquillo and working well."
It's all in the... altitude.
Here's what the champions are saying about the course.
