Basque cheers... will soon end.
Shortly, Basques - those intense and passionate cycling fans will no longer have their beloved Euskaltel-Euskadi team. A moment of great sadness for all cycling fans. With the hope of a guardian angel named, Fernando Alonso, to come at the 11th hour and save the team to have it snatched away (the cycling team and Alonso fail to reach agreement) is a terrible blow.
I watched stage 4 of the Tour of Beijing and wished for a Euskaltel-Euskadi win on today's queen stage. Garikoitz Oiarbide was the top finisher in 12th place.
The Basque team issued this statement...
"Euskaltel-Euskadi is unable to continue next season. It is a sad day for Euskaltel, for the team, for the current sponsors, for the fans and for everyone who has supported this project. We are sad that no company or entity has decided to back this team, the oldest in the world of elite cycling."
The familiar orange kit will fade away in the sunset... an image we'll never forget.
Sad but times up!
