The Grand Prix La Marseillaise was held Sunday. The race, 164.3km long, was marked by a demanding course with several difficult climbs, including the Col de l'Espigoulier, the Route des Cretes and the Col de la Gineste. Twenty kilometers from the finish, could the breakaway group of five go all way to the finish? In the final kilometre, the peloton was 20 seconds behind and made the catch, ending the breakaway with just 500 metres to go. It all came to the final sprint up the steep hill to the line with the young Frenchman Ferron narrowly passed Van Hemelen ...an exciting finish to the first round of the French Cycling Cup!
"It wasn't easy, it was obviously a little scary. In the last meters, I saw that I was coming back with a little speed but it took the photo finish to decide between us (with Vincent Van Hemelen). It's obviously a relief when the result comes and you win. It's great!"
