The World Champion started the day in seventh, 38 seconds adrift, attacked with 7km to go dropping the race leader Evenepoel and Vingegaard, both of whom he had lost time in Wednesday's time trial, winning stage six's summit finish in Combloux, and looking confident for the overall. Pogacar now leads the race by more than 40 seconds with two Alpine stages to come.
Leaving Vingegaard - next stop stage 6 victory
"I was feeling really good when I attacked and it was an all-out effort. I knew it was still about 15 minutes to the top and I had to pace myself after the attack. The feeling was there and the legs were feeling good. It was in my favorite to be in the front and one minute (lead) is good."
