La Vuelta: Pulled by a tractor, Vinegegaard in the hunt & Traeen holds onto lead

Pulled by the tractor

Jonas Vingegaard made his move on the steepest sections of the final climb to Valdezcaray, shook off Giulio Ciccone and extended his lead over his closest rivals. The Dane now trails in the GC by less than 40 seconds ahead of the rest day, with Torstein Traeen holding onto the red jersey. Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) finished second, 24 seconds behind, ahead of Joao Almeida.

"I thought Almeida's was the perfect wheel to go on, and I thought maybe we'd come back, but chapeau to him - I couldn't give him any turns. He as shout at me, but he's like a tractor, you know, especially when we got on this flatter section. Then the last kilometre when he went, it was impressive, I could only just come round him at the finish, but I'm happy to be honest. He told me to grow some balls. But if he rides a bit slower, I'll give him some more turns."
-Tom Pidcock. The Brit sits in fourth overall, 1:35 behind Torstein Traeen

Staying in the hunt

"They did super well. To be honest, maybe I didn't do my homework good enough because I thought it was closer to the finish when I attacked, and I was a bit surprised when I saw the 10-kilometre banner. But at that moment I had the gap, and I had to keep going. "
-Jonas Vinegegaard

"I didn't expect Jonas to be that fast. He went really fast when he attacked, and then it was just about surviving basically. At one point, I got help from two Jumbo guys, so it felt a bit like maybe they didn't want Jonas to have the jersey. Now I'm looking forward to the burger tonight."
-Torstein Traeen.
