Mathieu van der Poel won what was billed as a classic duel with Wout van Aert, with another stellar performance to win the men’s X2O Trofee Azencross Loenhout in Belgium. Woe for Van Aert, with untimely punctures, on the fourth lap and then on the sixth lap put the Belgian out of podium contention.
Lucinda Brand secured her 12-race winning streak and 16th season win in Loenhout. The Dutch rider soloed to her win by five seconds ahead of Kristyna Zemanova and third-placed Manon Bakker.
“I switched to a coarser tire tread to be able to release more power, and I knew I couldn’t wait for a sprint. Zemanova eventually broke.”
