For Felipe Orts, a podium place in his local World Cup in Benidorm was a win. Rightly so, with Mathieu van der Poel deciding the race early with a win, Orts became the day’s local hero.
He lined up carrying some inspiration… helmet showed his hometown, Villajoyosa, down the coast from Benidorm. As Van der Poel rode away, the race continued as riders attacked and hesitated. Orts was one of them and opened up a gap and kept it on. While Thibau Nys finally rode away on the final lap, Orts was in the position to defend a podium spot and gallantly finished in third… the local hero.
