Brennan wins big on his first Gran Tour road stage
Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana had an uncategorised uphill ramp to end the stage after a technical run-in. After almost five hours of racing from Monaco through the French Occitanie, Matthew Brennan (Visma Lease a Bike) powered to victory ahead of second place Pau Miquel (Bahrain Victorious), with race leader Tadej Pogacar in third place. The Slovenian now leads the Vuelta by nine seconds over Van Aert, who’d taken four bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint - with Brennan now third 10 seconds back.
“I was always going to be in the background to do the sprint in case the guys (out front) sat up and that’s exactly what happened. The guys sat up in the front and Christophe (Laporte) was able to guide me through all the hectic-ness of that. Hopefully it’s not the last one, it’s nice.”
