TdFF: Epic win for Haugset Tour de Pologne: Milan powers to stage 1 win

 

Sigurd Haugset, Norwegian national champion led stage 3 for 88km and held on to become the first Norwegian stage winner in the history of the Tour de France Femmes, and with her solo victory she moves into the leader’s yellow jersey. Stage 3 was 156.6km, which took the riders into Jura mountains for the first time and saw the race move from Switzerland into France, was blazing hot with temperatures hitting 37C in the shade.

“I never thought it was possible. It’s unreal. When I went, it wasn’t many seconds, and I thought, yeah, she will catch me. And I thought: ‘Shall I just drop down to her? Yeah OK, second is good.’ But I kept on.”

With the Vuelta a Espana to come, it was time for the week-long Tour de Pologne WorldTour race. It is regarded as an important preparation event for the Spanish Grand Tour.

The opening stage was won by Jonathan Milan in Koszalyn. The Italian national champion was the strongest, beating Paul Magnier and Noah Hobbs, second and third respectively. Milan also became the race’s first overall leader.
