Matthew Brennan has claimed victory for the fourth time on Stage 16 of the Vuelta. The route took the riders over the 181 kilometres from Cortegana to La Rabida on the Gulf of Cadiz in the Spanish region bordering Portugal. The 21-year-old once again secured victory ahead of Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Vito Braet (Lotto Intermareche) thereby equaling a nine-year-old record.
Back in 2017, it was Fernando Gaviria who, as a debutant in a Grand Tour - the Giro d’ltalia - managed to win four stages. Brennan even has the chance to better the record. There are two potential sprint stages to come before Sunday, which Brennan could win.
“It’s unbelievable. Four victories here, the plan was for one. As a team we’ve won six. I think. I can’t count , we’ve won so many.
“The stages that we’ve gone for we’ve really committed to the plan that we had. You’ve seen the boys all day today, they’ve been pushing so much wind, and to finish it off like that, Wout bringing me across the line, basically in a perfect place in such a chaotic final, it was perfect.”
