Ride for Glory

June 5th, 1988 Giro d'ltalia.

Thirty years ago today Andy Hampsten attacked at the base of the Gavia through horrendous conditions to take the Maglia Rosa and enter bike racing history. Hampsten placed second on this infamous stage (behind Eric Breukink) and eventually win the Giro by 1:43

"It was absolutely shocking what I did. I think if I ever ride or drive back up the Gavia Pass and realize how fast I went down it in those conditions, I'd scare myself silly."

- Andy Hampsten
