Torstein Traeen: Comeback & it’s for Gino

Torstein Traeen took the prize for being the first over the highes point of the 2024 Tour de Suisse which was dedicated to former teammate Gino Mader, who died tragically during last year’s race…

“It’s obviously special, it’s for Gino no? On the Gino mountain, rideforgino. It means the world, he was still a colleague and you still miss him. Obviously, in this team, it’s super special and we always want to ride for him, and on a day like this when his day was his mum is also here, it’s super special.”

“It wasn’t so much the plan to attack but more to follow, but on the climb I felt good and got the guys to set a strong pace and attacked and just came up short of the win. I attacked to see who would follow. I wasn’t super confident about the cobbled section as a lighter guy like myself suffers in that terrain and gets bumped around a bit. I attacked to test the legs and nobody followed so I pushed on to the line and am delighted to take the leader’s jersey.”

In May 2022, Torstein Traeen found out he had testicular cancer from a routine doping control. He won his battle with cancer, fought back and signed with Bahrain Victorious WorldTour team. And, today won the first mountain stage at Tour de Suisse…

What a comeback!
