Il Lombardia: Closer to Il Campionissimo

118th Il Lombardia Bergamo to Como 255kms results

World Champion Tadej Pogacar capped an astonishing year, with triple Tour de France, Giro d'ltalia and the world title. He matched Fausto Coppi, who won Lombardy five times in total and joins the four-in-a-row club (1946-1949,1954). And, he also ties Alfredo Binda with Lombardy victories (1925-1927, 1931). Pogacar made his move on the Colma di Sormano climb, 48km from the finish line in Como at the end of the 255km 'Race of the Falling Leaves' whose course had been modified following heavy rain and landslides in northern Italy.

The race for second, was briefly between Evenepoel, Mass, van Eetvelt, until the double Olympic champion broke clear on the descent off the Sormano. Third was up for grabs and was the most exciting in the end, Mass and van Eetvelt joined by Sivakov, then Ciccone, with the Italian snatching the final step on the podium.

Pogacar closes in: Il Campanissimo wins his fifth Lombardy (1954)
