2024 Cyclocross European Championships, Pontevedra

Air Nys flying to victory

Belgium's Thibau Nys is the new Cyclocross European Champion after an thrilling battle in Pontevedra, Nys denied home crowd favourite Felipe Orts, taking his biggest career victory. Dutch World Champion Fem van Empel is the Cyclocross European Champion ahead of Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado and Lucinda Brand after a dramatic fight in Spain.

"I'm actually very happy with this one. It was a very tough race and maybe the best battle of this season. I knew I couldn't make the difference on the straight sections. Right near the end, I was in a duel with Lucinda, and that just barely went my way. After that, I tried to stay as close as possible to Ceylin's wheel and went all out for the finish."

-Fem van Empel

"It gives wings. His explosiveness and killer instinct have allowed him to finish this off. Thibau can handle the pressure very well and actually gets a kick out of jerseys. There will be a big smile on his face later and he will get a big hug from me. A good glass of red wine will do tonight."

-Sven Nys

"I had complete control when I took the lead and I had the best companion in Felipe. I knew he would be ready for this championship and I knew he would go all out. This was really a goal for him. We understood each other perfectly and we went all out together. It was really 100 percent perfect. I can now just race in this jersey. I am speechless for a moment."
