After Friday's Classic Var, this weekend continues in the départment of Var in the the South of France with the 2-stage Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, between Contes and Gourdon on Saturday, then between Villefrance-sur-Mer and Vence on Sunday. In total, the course offers 293 km distance and 8000 meters of elevation gain.
Cristian Scaroni (XDS Astana) has gone back to back in France with his second one day win in as many days. At the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, the Italian (minus his mustache) upset the odds to take victory ahead of Bahrain-Victorious duo Santiago Buitrago and Lenny Martinez to take the stage 1 win.
"I can't believe it! It's just incredible to win two days in a row. I aimed to start this season strong, preparing myself to be in top form for the first months. Breaking that ice yesterday and finally winning was a huge relief.
Today's stage was very tough. My rivals set a high pace, knowing that long climbs aren't my strongest suit, but I managed to stay ahead, respond with a fast sprint, and take another victory. Now, I need to focus on tomorrow's stage. We need a solid race plan because there's no time to relax. We must stay focused and be ready to fight in the second stage."
