Giro’s first summit: Ayuso, Bernal, Gee. Dunkerque stage 3

It looked good for Egan Bernal during today's stage, the first summit finish of the Giro d'ltalia and a stage win looked possible. The Colombian put in a great performance on the final climb to Tagliacozzo. The leader of INEOS Grenadiers attacked 800 meters remaining, looking for the victory. He was followed by Juan Ayuso who then went on to take the stage win, but Bernal's strength was enough to finish third just ahead of Primoz Roglic.

"I was feeling really good. I saw the finish line close and I thought I could go for the stage. Obviously coming third is good, but I think we have to keep trying to win."
-Egan Bernal

"I knew that what I had to do was to attack in a finish as explosive as this one. I let others start the attacks, and when I saw my moment I went all out to the finish. So for sure this victory gives me a lot of confidence for the next days. Tomorrow I hope to get to the finish line well, because Sunday's Siena stage is going to be very, very difficult for the men in GC."
-Juan Ayuso. He is now only 4 seconds away from the pink jersey of Primo Roglic.

First summit finish and staying in touch: Derek Gee finished in 12th place @11 seconds.

“The boys did a great job keeping me well positioned and looking after me today. I was a little sore after the crash yesterday but in the end, I was happy with the legs. The finish was a bit too punchy for me but I’m satisfied to have limited the losses.”

Pierre Gautherat, who was second last Sunday at Tro-Bro Leon struck out solo in the final kilometre and took his first professional victory of his career on stage 3 of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque. Jake Stewart (Israel Premier Tech) finished second, while Alex Zingle (Visma Lease a Bike) took third. Zingle holds on to the lead headed into the final two stages. Lewis Askey (Groupama-FDJ), who finished fifth on the stage, dropped from second to third on GC.
