Van Der Poel wins over the cobbles Renewi Tour stage 3

In the final kilometers: the breakaway trio readies for the final cobble finish

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Deceuninck) took his first win since withdrawing from the Tour de France with pneumonia, winning the queen stage of the Renewi Tour.

Van der Poel was part of a three-man breakaway group which arrived at the bottom of the iconic climb, the Mur van Geraardsbergen. The finish line is halfway up the famous climb, before the steepest gradients and toughest cobbles. MVDP out-sprinted Arnaud De Lie (Lotto) and Tim Wellens (UAE) in third.

"If you have a finish on this kind of road here, you know it's gonna hurt. And I also knew Arno was going to make it a long sprint, and that's what happened. But in the end, I just had enough power to take the win."
