To mark the opening of European road racing season the first instalment of this week’s Challenge Mallorca id Trofeo Calvia. Antonio Morgado (UAE Team Emirates) stormed to victory, celebrating his 22nd birthday. Raced under attritional rainy conditions, was a battle between Morgado and Hector Alvarez. Just 19 and 22 years old, respectively, the pair put on a show of force that ended in a two-up sprint finish to the line in Palma Nova, Spain.
“We played the game, but Hector did a great race. Like me, he deserved to win, it was really 50/50 so I am happy for my victory. The next races are a little bit more for the climbers, but we can look forward to them as well.”

Challenge Mallorca
The five-day event is split between five one-day races, each with very different courses and suited to different riders. The five races all raced in the island of Mallorca, and with opportunities for the climbers, puncheurs, sprinters and this year a team time trial.
Trofeo Calvia (28 Jan), Trofeo Ses Salines (TTT, 29 Jan), Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana (30 Jan), Trofeo Andratx (31 Jan) and the Trofeo Palma (1 Feb).
