Mathieu van der Poel crossed the line to win an exciting stage 21 of the Tour de France on the Champs-Elysees. Given the three ascents over the Montmartre laps, born out of the Paris Olympic road race won by Remco Evenepoel, promised to be dramatic for the second-consecutive year.
On the third ascent that Van der Poel made his move, which only Tadej Pogacar could follow. The pair shared their workload for the last 9km, with the sprinters gaining. Pogacar faded but Van der Poel surged in his classic style speed to the stage win by half a bike length in front of his teammate Philipsen.
