TdF stage 4: Cancer survivor Traeen takes the yellow jersey

Former world champion Mads Pedersen sped clear to win the sprint into Foix with ease despite the 40C plus heat. But, it was a memorable day for Torsten Traeen (UNO X Mobility), the 30-year-old Norwegian who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 gave UNO X Mobility it’s first yellow jersey.

Traeen started the day 5:06 behind leader Tadej Pogacar. He crossed the line in 8th place as part of the lead group of 10 riders, which finished 12:59 ahead of Pogacr’s group, launching him into the maillot jaune.

The Norwegian’s diagnosis was revealed after a random doping control. He underwent immediate surgery but returned to racing with a clean bill of health later that season. After his successful surgery to remove a tumour, he posted: “I got 99 problems, but cancer ain’t one of them any more.”

Four years after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, Torstein Traeen is wearing the Tour de France yellow jersey, adding to the Vuelta a Espana leader’s jersey he held in 2025.
