Nairo Quintana (Movistar) launched a vintage climbing display to win stage 2 of the Vuelta a Asturias, on the the Alto de Carabanzo to drop breakaway companion Adria Pericas to take a solo victory in Pola de Lena. In his final season as a professional rider, Quintana (aka. Nairoman) turned back the clock to win his first race in four years at the Vuelta Asturias on Friday. The race continued on under the shadow of the tragic news of the death of Colombian rider Cristian Camilo Munoz following a crash at the Tour du Jura. With this emotional victory, the Colombian places him among the key contenders for the overall classification. The Vuelta Asturias paid tribute with a moment of silence before the stage, and Munoz’s Nu Colombian team withdrew in mourning.
“It’s truly sad. This morning, when we held the news, I was left speechless. A young man who had so much, so much life ahead of him, so much to give to sport and to the country, and it’s truly sad and tragic.
This victory is very special, and I want to dedicate it with all my heart to the memory of our beloved compatriot Camilo Munoz. His tragic loss is an immense sorrow for the entire Colombian and world cycling community.”
